Qatar is a key player in the global fertiliser market and the largest exporter of urea with about 15% share of the world’s supply. The annual production capacity of urea is 5.6 million MT and 3.8 million MT of ammonia. All of Qatar’s fertiliser production is marketed, sold and distributed solely and entirely by Muntajat. The urea and ammonia are essential for producing higher-yielding crops, which feed millions of people around the world and to produce higher-yields. The range of fertilisers offered also find applications in the chemical, healthcare and automobile industries among others.

Ammonia

Ammonia is a chemical compound made of 82% nitrogen and 18% hydrogen. It is produced using natural gas as the main feedstock. The other reactants required are steam and air.

The feed materials undergo a series of reactions in the ammonia plant, which produces ammonia in its gaseous form. It is liquefied under pressure by cooling.

Ammonia is stored at a temperature of minus 33° C in a specially refrigerated ammonia storage tank. The majority of ammonia produced in the Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO) ammonia plants is consumed internally as feedstock for the urea plants with the surplus exported worldwide.

Granular Urea

Urea, which contains 46.6% nitrogen, is a popular and cost-effective nitrogen-based fertiliser. More than 90% of the urea produced worldwide is destined for use in agriculture. When applied as a fertiliser, soil bacteria transform urea into ammonium and nitrate, which are then absorbed by plants and help fuel their growth. Urea is produced when ammonia and carbon dioxide react under high pressure. During the final stage of production, QAFCO transforms liquid urea is into spherical granules (2-4mm) and prills (1-2.8mm) for easier transport and application. Urea also has a range of other industrial uses and is the primary component in melamine.

Denox Aqueous Urea (32.5%)

  • Urea is a solid fertiliser containing 46.6% nitrogen. It is produced by the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide under high pressure, both feedstocks being supplied by the ammonia plant.
  • The urea, produced as a solution, is converted into solid fertiliser of spherical granules in the final section of urea plant called the granulation unit.

SULPHUR

The State of Qatar is globally recognised as a reliable supplier of high quality sulphur (minimum dust) in the international markets with a production of more than 2.3 million MT per annum from various Refineries and Gas Processing facilities located in Ras Laffan Industrial City (operated by Qatargas, Shell GTL, Dolphin Energy, Al Khaleej Gas, among others.) and Mesaieed Industrial City (QP Refinery, NGL Plant, QAPCO and Q-Chem).

Ras Laffan Port, located in Ras Laffan Industrial City has a state of art berth dedicated to sulphur loading. At Mesaieed Port, located in Mesaieed Industrial City, sulphur is loaded from QAPCO’s and Q-CHEM’s respective berths.

Sulphur is an essential nutrient for plant growth. It improves the efficiency of other essential plant nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. Approximately 50-60% is used in the production of fertilisers. Other applications include the manufacture of batteries, paints, detergents, sulphuric acid for industrial use (pulp and paper), water treatment, metal ore leaching (copper, nickel, uranium, etc.), plus building materials (cement filler) and asphalt (heat resistance).

Aqueous Ammonia

Aqueous ammonia is a solution produced by absorption of gaseous ammonia in demineralized water. Our 19% Aqueous Ammonia is applied to reduce the level of NOx (Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide) from flue gases from various production plants which are responsible for the greenhouse effect and acid rains. Power plants are increasingly using this product to great advantage contributing to the protection of our environment

Urea Formaldehyde Condensate (UFC)

Urea Formaldehyde Condensate (UFC-85) is a viscous liquid containing 60% Formaldehyde, 25% urea, 0.21% Methanol and 14.79% water. Formaldehyde is first produced by the reaction of Methanol with air, then absorbed in urea solution to form UFC-85.
UFC-85 is an additive that is mixed with the urea to improve its strength and is used as an anticaking agent. Around 80% of the UFC-85 produced is consumed internally in QAFCO’s own urea plants and the rest is exported to neighbouring countries.
